Since The Fourth Monkey, the first book of this gripping series, kept me completely glued to the pages, I have been really looking forward to reading the sequel, THE FIFTH TO DIE, and once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down.

The book starts four months after the events of The Fourth Monkey and Chicago detective Sam Porter is still looking for Anson Bishop, aka 4MK (the Fourth Monkey Killer), even though the FBI has removed him from the case. In the meantime, there is another killer on the loose who is kidnapping and killing young girls while Anson Bishop wants his help in finding his mother.

Even though the novel is told from different points of views, from the detectives to the FBI, from the killer to the victims, and the reader seems to get a full view of the story, there are so many twists and surprises to keep you always on the edge of your seat. The chapters are short and almost each one of them ends with a shocking revelation or a twist that made me say “I’ll read just another chapter” and then I found myself reading another 100 pages.

The author created a cast of well-developed and multi-layered characters. Anson Bishop is very complex and we find out more about his troubled past. Sam Porter has also some secrets from the past and he is still helped by his team. I love the characters of Nash, Clair, and Kloz who have Sam’s back, even when he is forced to take a leave, and there were moments when they made me laugh with their quips and their irony. I also liked the character of FBI agent Poole and I am already looking forward to read more about this character.

THE FIFTH TO DIE is fast-paced, dark, intense, and chilling. The ending left me in complete shock and breathless and I can’t wait to read the third book of this brilliant and captivating series.

The protagonist of DEEP DIRTY TRUTH is Lori Anderson. I liked this character right from the start, right from the first novel in the series Deep Down Dead. She is determined, fearless, smart, and loyal. A mother with a young daughter, Lori is a bounty hunter, travelling around the United States looking for fugitives to bring back to prison. However, in this third novel, she is the one with a bounty on her head. Lori’s happiness at playing happy family with JT and their nine-year-old Dakota is cut short by the Mafia mob who wants her to find someone for them in exchange for the lives and freedom of her and her family. But the job is not as straightforward as it seems and, in a race against time, Lori has to face not only mobsters, but also the FBI, and the alligators that live in the Florida Everglades.

The novel is fast-paced, thrilling and completely immersive. Lori is a very likable and well-crafted character, she is strong-willed, resourceful, and courageous and she is ready to do absolutely everything to protect her family. I like that, in this novel, the story is told also from JT’s point of view and we get to see more of this character. He is Lori’s mentor, the man she loves, the father of her child and, in the previous two books, he remained always a bit on the background, but now he has a more central role in the story and we get a better understanding of this character that I like more and more.

The author’s wonderful writing style and her great attention to details bring the reader right into the Florida setting with its heat, the dangerous alligators, and the sharks in the ocean. Gripping and full of tension, DEEP DIRTY TRUTH will keep you on the edge of your seat and, even though I think this is the best one so far, I am already looking forward to book number 4!

I heard so many good things about Lucy Foley’s new novel that I was really looking forward to reading it. My expectations were pretty high, as I read many positive reviews,  and I am happy to say that they were fully met. I was so immersed in the novel that I had trouble putting it down and I read it in two days.

A group of friends, a remote location, a snowstorm that stops everyone from getting in and out, a murderer among them, a suspenseful atmosphere worth of an Agatha Christie’s novel, these are all elements that make this novel twisty, compelling, and unputdownable.

The protagonists met at Oxford University ten years earlier and they have been friends since then. There is the golden couple, Julien and Miranda,  who has been together since college; there are the new parents, Giles and Sanita; there is Mark with his girlfriend of three years, Emma, the outsider of the group who would do anything to fit in with Mark’s friends; there is Katie, the single quiet workaholic friend; and there are Nick and Bo who are there just because they are friends with Katie. These nine people spend every New Year’s Eve together and this year, they have rented The Lodge, an exclusive house in the Scottish Highlands. Everyone is hiding something and when a body turns up, past jealousies, secrets and lies risk to come to light.

Told from different points of views and on two timelines (before and after the murder), THE HUNTING PARTY is a twisty and gripping novel. The characters are flawed and often not very likable. They are very well-drawn and jealousies, secrets, and tension between the group of friends is palpable through the pages. One of them is killed and one of them is probably the murderer and Lucy Foley does an amazing job keeping the reader in the dark about their identity and, despite the hints she gives here and there, I didn’t figure it out until at the end when it was all revealed.

I loved the setting the author chose for this gripping novel. A remote house, a beautiful winter landscape, snow everywhere, they all fit perfectly with the twisty and chilling plot of the novel and, thanks to the author’s attention to details, I could almost picture it in my head.

THE HUNTING PARTY is a riveting, captivating, and atmospheric read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, a well-written and gripping story that you won’t be able to put down and I’d like to thank HarperCollins for providing me with a copy of the book.

This novel has the perfect setting for a gripping and suspenseful murder story. A small town in the middle of a snowstorm with blocked roads and no phone signal. Add a killer on the loose, people looking for a shelter from the snow, a remote farmhouse, and the landlord of a closed inn who seems to be hiding something, and I found myself spending a Sunday afternoon completely immersed in this novel.

The story is told from three different points of views. One is a young woman with a complicated past and secrets to hide. She is hitch-hiking through the country when she is caught in the snowstorm. A nurse gives her a lift in her car, but from here things get more difficult and darker. Then, there is an old man bedridden by old age and disease. He thinks about his past, his estranged son, and his current obscure situation. And lastly, there is a young and ambitious officer who wants to prove herself and dreams of the bright light of the big city, but she is stuck at her desk. What do these three characters have in common?

The novel is slow-paced but full of tension. Page after page, there is a weird feeling of something bad about to happen that kept me glued to the pages. A series of gruesome murders and the dark atmosphere that frames the story make for a chilling and haunting read.

The characters have a past full of secrets, often disturbing, that are slowly revealed. Although I didn’t find them very likable, the protagonists of the novel are multi-layered, complex, and very well-drawn.

HALFWAY is a dark, claustrophobic, and gripping novel and I’d like to thank Emma Welton for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.

It’s snowing, it’s almost Christmas time. It should be a joyful time, but not for Tilly, a young veterinary student in Cambridge. To pay her studies she works at Ashton’s bookshop. The owner of the shop, Dennis Wade, is nice and polite so it’s a complete shock when, one morning, Tilly finds him hanging from the ceiling. And what at the beginning appeared to be a suicide, it quickly turns out to be a murder. DCI Barrett and DI Palmer are called to investigate, but it’s not easy to find a killer when it seems there is no reason why someone would want to kill the victim.

Gruesome murders, a twisty plot, and engaging characters created a suspenseful and gripping thriller. The novel is full of surprising and unexpected revelations that keep the tension high. The story kept me guessing and until the end, I couldn’t figure out the who and why of the murders.

MURDER IN THE DARK is told from many points of views, from Tilly to the detectives investigating the murder, from the victim’s wife to his employees. The author focuses not only on the murder, but she also describes the personal lives of the characters involved in the story. The characters are described psychologically and emotionally. We read about the grief of the victim’s family, about the detectives’ personal problems, and about the psychological consequences suffered by Tilly after finding her boss’ body, making both the story and the characters more realistic and relatable.

MURDER IN THE DARK is a thrilling, immersive, and well-written novel, a good read to enjoy during the Christmas holidays, and I’d like to thank Emma Welton and Bloodhound Books for inviting me to take part in the blog tour of this suspenseful novel.

Welcome to my stop on the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Tour. Before taking part in the blog tour I had never heard of Rachaele Hambleton and her online page PTWM, but after reading the blurb I was really intrigued and I couldn’t wait to read it.

Even though the title includes the word “mummy”, this is not only the story of a mother and stepmother, it is also the story of a daughter, a sister, a friend, a wife. It’s the story of a woman. In recounting her story, Rachaele Hambleton is honest and relatable. We get an insight into the life of a woman whose life was far from easy since her childhood. From her parents’ divorce to dropping out of school, from a series of bad relationships to her pregnancies, from finally finding the love of her life to becoming a stepmother, the author doesn’t leave anything out. With a clear and fluid and writing style, Rachaele Hambleton shares the most important difficult, emotional, and happiest moments of her life.

Moving, entertaining, and honest, the book addresses themes that are current, common, and, unfortunately, too real, like domestic abuse, bullying, and post-partum depression. I found heart-breaking some of the experiences that the author shares in the book, both her personal experiences and the ones from other women. I shed a few tears to some of the stories I read.

PART-TIME WORKING MUMMY. A PATCHWORK LIFE is not only the memoir of a determined and hard-working woman, it is also a guide to women and mothers who found themselves in her same situation. She gives advice, she bravely shares her own experience, making the book more relatable and realistic. The book is engrossing and engaging. One moment, I found myself crying and, a few pages later, I would be laughing. I couldn’t put it down and I’d like to thank Tracy Fenton for inviting me to take part in it.

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for 25 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS. This is another Christmas novel that I really enjoyed this year (I have lost count of how many I have already read so far, and they are all really good!). 25 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS is romantic, heart-warming, and completely captivating. It is a story of love, friendship, and family with likable and entertaining characters and an evocative atmosphere.

Kate and Daniel don’t know each other but they meet every year during the Christmas period when he goes to buy a Christmas tree at the store she works. Daniel only knows Kate as the Christmas Tree Girl while Kate remembers Daniel as the man who arrives with a woman on a wheelchair. Only this year is alone. While Kate, a single mother to a six-year-old boy, is struggling with her job, problems at her son’s school, and making ends meet, Daniel is dealing with his loss and spending his first Christmas alone.

Kate is a strong and resourceful character. She is raising a child alone, she hates her job and her lascivious boss, she struggles financially, and she has to deal with problems at her son’s school. Nevertheless, she manages to make the Christmas period special both for Jack and for her by creating an advent calendar full of fun Christmassy activities to do everyday. Daniel is too good to be true. He is sweet and kind, he volunteers, and he’s always ready to help other people. His relationship with Kate sometimes borders to stalking, but in a cute and sweet way, and I really liked this character.

The author created a captivating and enjoyable novel with well-crafted characters. There is romance, there are emotional moments, there are funny and entertaining moments. There are Christmas trees, lights, decoration, snow, and even Christmas miracles. 25 DAYS ‘TIL CHRISTMAS is the right novel to read and get you in a good and festive mood and I’d like to thank Alex and Orion for providing me with an early copy of the book.

I love Christmas. I love the decorations, the music, the snow, the food, and the festive feeling. And I love the Christmas novels that come out at this time of the year. I love their heartwarming and cosy atmosphere, the beautiful stories, and the evocative settings. And CHRISTMAS MIRACLES AT THE LITTLE LOG CABIN meets all these requirements, starting from the setting. The author chose two beautiful locations for this novel. One of them is Manhattan that I think it’s one of these places that turns magical during the Christmas period. The other is Inglenook Falls, a small town outside of New York, that with its Christmas markets, snow, isolated cabins, and general good feeling gives a real atmospheric tone to the novel.

The protagonists are engaging, realistic, and very likable. Holly is a journalist who left her well-paid job at a magazine to go freelance and become her own boss. Her first assignment is to cover a new luxury hotel at Inglenook Falls and it’s here that one day she stumbles upon Mitch’s remote cabin. Following a bad few years, Mitch has isolated himself from the rest of the world and spends his time in the woods surrounding his cabin where he occasionally sells beautiful Christmas trees. Holly and Mitch couldn’t be more different: where she is cheerful, friendly, and outgoing, he is reclusive, ill-tempered, and stubborn. But their meetings were entertaining and they were the part of the story I mostly looked forward to reading.

The plot is romantic, engrossing, funny, and overall Christmassy and it made me wish I was reading it in front of a fireplace while sipping hot chocolate.

This is the fourth book in the New York Ever After series and I am sorry to say I haven’t read the first three books, yet, but I am definitely going to do it soon. If, like me, you’ve just found out about this fabulous series, you won’t have any problem following the story and the characters in CHRISTMAS MIRACLES AT THE LITTLE LOG CABIN, as the novel can be read also as a stand-alone. After a very stressful year, Faye and her husband Hugh move to a new house with their two young children. Hoping to leave their past behind, Faye and Hugh are looking forward to starting a new life in Cross House, a big house in North Yorkshire in need of renovations. However, Faye’s hopes wane when her sleeps are interrupted by the presence of someone intruding in her bedroom in the middle of the night. She can see him, but she can feel his presence and her nights are spent awake trying to protect her children from whoever this intruder is. Her life gets even more complicated when she finds the journals of the previous owner. A former journalist, Faye’s curiosity is piqued by what she finds in them and she decides to do some investigation on the family who used to live in her new home.

THE UNINVITED is a bit of a mystery novel, a bit of family drama, a bit of a ghost story. There is a possible haunted house, a presence that nobody can see, and a past full of secrets and lies. As I read the story, there was always this creepy feeling that something bad was about to happen and that gives the novel a suspenseful and chilling feeling. The author created a perfect protagonist for this story. A breakdown and a year full of worry and strain make Faye an unreliable narrator. Everything makes her nervous, her husband doesn’t seem to believe there is someone lurking in the house, so I didn’t know whether to believe her or not, which makes the novel full of twists and surprises. Especially, I loved the ending which was completely unexpected and perfect to complete the novel.
