It’s only the beginning of her story…

Jess Metcalf is perfectly happy with her quiet, predictable life – it’s just the way she likes it. But when her beloved grandmother passes away and she loses her job at the local library, her life is turned upside-down.

Packing up her grandmother’s books, she moves to a tiny cottage in a charming country village. To her surprise, Jess finds herself the owner of an old red telephone box, too – and she soon turns it into the littlest library around!

It’s not long before the books are borrowed and begin to work their magic – somehow, they seem to be bringing the villagers together once more…

Maybe it’s finally time for Jess to follow her heart and find a place to call home?

I am delighted to welcome you on my stop for the blog tour of The Littlest Library, the fantastic new novel by Poppy Alexander.

The protagonist of the novel is Jess Metcalf, a young woman in her thirties. She is likable and realistic, a woman everyone can relate to. Jess has decided it is time to move on. After the death of her grandmother Mimi, who has raised her after the death of her parents, and after losing her job at the library, Jess really needs a fresh start and a car drive leads her to the village of Middlemass where she impulsively buys a house with a red telephone box outside. Jess quickly falls in the small community, making new friends, attending the local council meetings, and setting up the red telephone box as a library. The only thing spoiling a bit her new life is her arrogant and moody new neighbour Aidan. Will Jess and Aidan ever get along? And will she find a job that will allow her to remain in Middlemas?

The Littlest Library is an engaging, easy, and fun read. The characters are easy to like and well-drawn. I loved the beautiful and vivid descriptions of the scenery (that made it easy for me to imagine the village of Middlemass in my head) and of the food (that made my mouth water).

If you are looking for romance, friendship, and family, then The Littlest Library is the right read for you. You will also find a strong feeling of community and belonging and themes of grief and new beginnings.

Poppy Alexander is an author I always enjoy reading and The Littlest Library is definitely one of her must-read! Highly recommended!

Keep your family close, because your enemies are closer.

University student Matt Pine has just received devastating news. Nearly his entire family have
been found dead while holidaying in Mexico. The local police claim it was an accident, but the FBI
aren’t convinced – and they won’t tell Matt why.

The tragedy thrusts his family into the media spotlight again. Seven years ago, Matt’s older
brother, Danny, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his teenage girlfriend. Danny has
always sworn he was innocent, and last year, a true crime documentary that claimed he was
wrongfully convicted went viral.

Now his family’s murder is overlapping with Danny’s case, Matt is determined to uncover the
truth behind the crime that sent his brother to prison. Even if it means putting his own life in
danger, and confronting his every last fear.

Happy Sunday everyone and welcome on my stop for the blog tour of Every Last Fear, the gripping new novel by Alex Finlay.

Seven years ago, eighteen-year-old Danny Pine was accused of killing his girlfriend Charlotte and he was sentenced to life in prison. His family always believed in his innocence, especially his father Evan and his younger sister Maggie, who spent the last seven years investigating the case on their own and chasing online tips, especially after a Netflix documentary put Danny’s case in the limelight.

Twenty-one-year-old Matt Pine doesn’t want anything to do with his brother Danny and his case and he is starting a new life in New York where he studies to become a filmmaker. When his family, his mother, his father, and his two younger siblings, are found dead during a holiday in Mexico, the local police considers it a freak accident caused by a gas leak, but when Matt arrives in Mexico to take their bodies back home, he realizes that maybe his family didn’t die by accident. In the meantime, FBI agent Sarah Keller also suspects foul play in the death of the Pine family and starts investigating. Did they discover something that may prove Danny’s innocence?

Every Last Fear is completely addictive. I read it in one sitting one night: I started reading it after dinner and, next thing I know, I finished it and it’s 2 am. The author knows how to keep the tension high and the readers on the edge of their seat. I don’t know how many times I thought: “I am going to finish this chapter and then I will stop reading”, and then something happened and I couldn’t put it down.

The story is told from the points of views of the members of the Pine family and FBI agent Sarah Keller. I really liked these characters because they felt very realistic and authentic. They are flawed and relatable and they have to face their problems and their mistakes. The Pine family has faced a lot during the years, including a lot of criticism and backlash in the small town in Nebraska where the homicide took place and that they were forced to leave. And yet, they never doubted Danny’s innocence and they are hopeful that they will be able to prove it. Sarah is a mother and wife who feels guilty for how much time her jobs take her away from her family. But she is also an excellent FBI agent who won’t stop until she finds out the truth.

I can’t find a single flaw in Every Last Fear: it is well-written and full of twists and surprises, it is an intriguing and engrossing page-turner that you can’t stop reading.

A huge thank you to Lauren and Head of Zeus for inviting me to join the blog tour and providing me with a proof of this amazing book.

#BookReview: THE SHADOW IN THE GLASS by J. J. A. Harwood @JJAHarwood @HarperVoyagerUK

Publication: 18th March 2021 – HarperVoyager

A deliciously gothic story of wishes and curses – a new dark fairy tale set against a Victorian backdrop full of lace and smoke.

Once upon a time Ella had wished for more than her life as a lowly maid.

Now forced to work hard under the unforgiving, lecherous gaze of the man she once called stepfather, Ella’s only refuge is in the books she reads by candlelight, secreted away in the library she isn’t permitted to enter.

One night, among her beloved books of far-off lands, Ella’s wishes are answered. At the stroke of midnight, a fairy godmother makes her an offer that will change her life: seven wishes, hers to make as she pleases. But each wish comes at a price and Ella must decide whether it’s one she’s willing to pay…

A smouldering, terrifying new spin on Cinderella – perfect for fans of Laura Purcell and Erin Morgenstern.

Eleonor “Ella” was promised the future of a lady, with parties, clothes, and travels, but then her guardian, Mrs. Pembroke, got sick and died and Ella was told she had to earn her stay and became one of the servants at Granborough House. After the death of the mistress of the house, life turned grim inside Granborough House and the girls knew what would happen if the master of the house turned his attention on one of them.

As a servant, Ella knows that her future won’t be bright and it certainly won’t be the future promised by Mrs. Pembroke before her death, but she would do anything to change her life. After spending the entire day cleaning, washing, and avoiding catching Mr. Pembroke’s attention, Ella finds refuge at night in the family’s library where she hides to read stories and fairytales that allow her to escape her miserable life, at least for a few hours. One night, a woman visits her in the library offering her seven wishes in exchange for her soul. Ella wants a better life for herself and for the people she loves, but each wish comes to a cost. Is the sacrifice worth it?

I love how the author brings the reader directly into Ella’s head so that you can feel her every emotion, every fear, betrayal, heartbreak, and hope that leads Ella to make choices that will have dire consequences and will change her life. Ella is a flawed and complex character. While at the beginning I really felt for her, the more I read, the more I questioned her choices. But while I found her selfish, I could also see that she cared for her fellow servants and the people she loves.

The Shadow in the Glass is a dark and compelling retelling of Cinderella that kept me completely engrossed and it’s out now!

A huge thank you to Harper Voyager and NetGalley for providing me with a proof of the novel.

Perfect for fans of Helen Hoang’s The Love Quotient and Sally Thorne’s The Hating Game, YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER is laugh-out-loud funny, painfully relatable, and bitingly smart.

Hilarious, romantic, witty, addictive. That’s how I would describe You Deserve Each Other, the fantastic novel by Sarah Hogle. I had so much fun reading this novel, I often had tears in my eyes from laughing. The two protagonists, Naomi and Nicholas, are amazing. I adored them and their story.

Naomi and Nicholas have been together for two years. They live together and they are about to get married, but Naomi is not as excited as she should be about the wedding. His parents are paying for it and his overbearing mother is choosing everything from the flowers and the food to her wedding dress and the bridesmaids. Also, she is not sure if she still loves Nicholas, but there is no way that she is going to be the one to break it off. When she finds out that Nicholas is not so thrilled about the wedding either, they start a war and play games and pranks on each other to push the other to end the relationship.

Even though at the beginning I found the two protagonists a tiny bit annoying, I quickly grew to love them and I rooted for them and their story. Both Naomi and Nicholas felt authentic and I enjoyed their wit and their bickering and I couldn’t put the book down.

You Deserve Each Other has everything a great rom-com needs: there is a lot of humor and a lot of romance. The characters are incredible and likable (except, of course, for the villain future mother-in-law), and the writing is addictive. I can’t wait to read more from this author. Highly recommended!

#BookReview: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF STEPHANIE MAILER by Joël Dicker (Translated from the French by Howard Curtis) @QuercusBooks @maclehosepress @MillsReid11 #StephanieMailer

Publication: 4th March 2021 – MacLehose Press

A gripping new thriller with a killer twist from the author of The Truth of the Harry Quebert Affair

In the summer of 1994, the quiet seaside town of Orphea reels from the discovery of two brutal murders.

Confounding their superiors, two young police officers, Jesse Rosenberg and Derek Scott crack the case and arrest the murderer, earning themselves handsome promotions and the lasting respect of their colleagues.

But twenty years later, just as he is on the point of taking early retirement, Rosenberg is approached by Stephanie Mailer, a journalist who believes he made a mistake back in 1994 and that the real murderer is still out there, perhaps ready to strike again. Before she can give any more details however, Stephanie Mailer mysteriously disappears without trace, and Rosenberg and Scott are forced to confront the awful possibility that her suspicions might have been proved horribly true.

What happened to Stephanie Mailer?

What did she know?

And what really happened in Orphea all those years ago?

**********

I really enjoyed The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer. Yes, the book is more than 600 pages and the pace is at times slow, but I was completely engrossed in the story and there are twists that I didn’t see coming.

It all starts on 30th July 1994, in Orphea, a town in the Hamptons. The entire town is excited for the opening of the first Theater Festival, but things take a dark turn when four people are murdered right before the beginning of the festival. The killer was caught and one of the detectives who solved the case is now a captain. However, twenty years earlier, that same detective, Jesse Rosenberg, is approached by Stephanie Mailer, a journalist, at his retirement party. Stephanie is convinced that the police accused the wrong man, but she disappears that same night. Since it seems that somebody wants to make sure that they never find out what Stephanie knew, Jesse starts to wonder whether they made a mistake twenty years ago and together with his then partner, Derek Scott, and newly-arrived detective Betsy Kanner, they investigate both Stephanie’s disappearance and the twenty-year-old murders.

The characters are flawed and well-developed and I especially liked how well Jesse, Derek, and Betsy work together as a team. The mystery is really intriguing and difficult to solve. I didn’t figure out the truth until it was revealed. The disappearance of Stephanie and the murders are obviously linked and the list of suspects keeps growing and, as the twentieth anniversary of the murders and the Theatre Festival approach, all the suspects seem to converge to Ophelia. There is a mysterious play that will reveal the truth about the murders, there are secrets, corruption, family drama, and personal tragedy to keep you engrossed in the story.

The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer is a character-driven, thrilling, and suspenseful novel and it’s out today!

A huge thank you to Milly and MacLehose Press for providing me with a proof of the novel.

Happy Monday and happy first day of March. I am delighted to welcome you on my stop for the blog tour of Flappy Entertains, the fantastic new novel by Santa Montefiore.

I had so much fun reading this book. Flappy Entertains is entertaining, light-hearted, and refreshing, exactly what we need to right now to cheer us up.

Flappy Scott-Booth is the queen of Badley Compton. Everyone knows that the first row in church at Sunday mass belongs to her. No party is complete without her. Her husband owns the local golf club and they have gardeners, a cook, and Flappy has just hired her own PA. Everyone wants to be her friends and she is always in control until the Harvey-Smiths move to the village. Hedda Harvey-Smith seems oblivious to Flappy’s social position, while her husband Charles captures Flappy’s attention and heart.

Santa Montefiore wrote another fantastic novel that will capture you from the very beginning. I loved the small community setting full of gossip, jealousies, and social ranks to respect. Flappy is a fantastic character. The perfect host with always the right food and the right wine. The seemingly well-read book club leader who secretly reads the Daily Mail and asks her PA to find the right book to propose at the next meeting. The yoga guru who is building her meditation nook to hide a huge secret. She really made me laugh and I liked how she developed throughout the novel.

Charming, enchanting, and witty, Flappy Entertains is the perfect read to escape for a few hours of entertainment and laughter. Highly recommended!

Exit is the new novel by Belinda Bauer and it’s full of mystery and twists and it focuses on the theme of euthanasia and loss.

Seventy-five-year-old Felix has known his own share of suffering, loss, and grief in his life and now, a pensioner, he is an Exiteer and he helps others to end their own suffering. Who are the Exiteers? They assist people to die when they choose to end their agony due to a terminal illness, all within the limits of legality. Felix has kept company to many people during their last moments and, in his latest assignment in Number 3 Black Lane, he is accompanied by twenty-three-year-old Amanda. Everything seems to go as smoothly as usual until something goes very wrong and the police declares the death a murder and Felix is on the run.

The two main protagonists of the novel are Felix and detective Calvin Bridge. I adored the character of sweet and kind-hearted Felix who just wants to do the right thing. He is still facing his painful past and I really felt for him. While he tries to figure out what went wrong in Number 3 Black Lane, the police is also investigating led by detective Calvin Bridge. He is also an interesting and favorite character and I enjoyed his easy relationship with his colleagues and I liked how he develops throughout the novel.

Exit is not a fast-paced thriller, but the suspense is high and there is a lot of humor and wit. Brilliantly-written and with a clever and entertaining plot, this is another gripping and dark novel by one of my favourite crime authors and I highly recommend all crime fans – and not – to not miss it!

You wake up.
You can’t remember what happened.
The man lying next to you is not your husband.
And he’s not breathing…

Louise wakes up. Her head aches, her mouth is dry, her memory is fuzzy. But she suspects she’s done something bad.

She rolls over towards her husband, Niall. The man who, until recently, made her feel loved.

But it’s not Niall who’s lying beside her. In fact, she’s never seen this man before.

And he’s dead . . .

As Louise desperately struggles to piece her memories back together, it’s clear to Detective Jonah Sheens and his team that she is their prime suspect – though they soon find she’s not the only one with something to hide.

Did she do it? And, if not, can they catch the real killer before they strike again?

Lie Beside Me is the third novel by Gytha Lodge that features DCI Jonah Sheen and his team as they investigate a twisty and complex case in Southampton.

The story starts with Louise, a woman narrating in a letter to her husband how she woke up, after a night of drinking, to find a man dead next to her. She has no recollection of who he is, how he’s ended up in her bed, and, mostly important, whether she killed him. Even though Louise is the prime suspect, DCI Jonah Sheen, DS Ben Lightman, and DC Juliette Hansen have a list of suspects full of secrets to go through.

Louise is a complex and multi-layered character. Through the letter she writes to her husband, we slowly learn about Drunk Louise, the confident and vibrant woman she becomes after too many drinks, so different from the insecure Sober Louise. We learn about her dependent friendship with April and about her strained marriage with Niall. While I really felt for her, I couldn’t help wondering, is she a killer?

While the case is complicated, intriguing, and full of shocking revelations, the detectives’ personal lives also make for an engrossing read: Juliette Hanson still lives in fear of her abusive ex-boyfriend who stalks her and threatens the new life she has created for herself in Southampton. Luckily, she can count on her colleagues, especially DS Ben Lightman (I loved their easy banter). And DCI Jonah Sheen also has to face complications in his love life. I am really looking forward to reading more about these characters.

Gytha Lodge is an incredible storyteller who knows how to draw you into the story. Lie Beside Me is a suspenseful and gripping novel full of twists and surprises until the very end. If you haven’t read the author’s previous two novels not to worry, it can be easily read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend you give Lie Beside Me and the entire series a try!

I am thrilled to welcome you on my stop for the blog tour of Smoke Screen, the suspenseful new novel by Thomas Enger and Jørn Lier Horst.

A bomb goes off during the celebrations of New Years Eve and one of the injured is Ruth-Kristine, a woman who is already known to the police, especially to detective Alexander Blix. A few years earlier, Patricia, her toddler daughter, was kidnapped and was never found. While the police thinks that the bomb is a terrorist attack, detective Blix thinks it is somehow connected to Ruth-Kristine and to Patricia’s unsolved case. Journalist Emma Ramm was also on the scene of the attack and she also starts to investigate the Patricia case, becoming personally involved.

I don’t read many Nordic thrillers – I really should read more of them -, but when I do, I find myself completely engrossed in the story and Smoke Screen is the latest Nordic thriller to capture my attention. I was completely addicted to the story and the characters, especially in the second half of the novel as the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together and the tension keeps rising and rising. And the writing is incredible. It is seamless, it is clear, it captures you.

I loved the close relationship between detective Blix and Emma. It is an unlikely and complex relationship as he is a detective and she is a journalist, but they are connected by a past case that bonded them in a kind of father-daughter relationship.

Smoke Screen is full of twists and suspense, with engaging and intriguing characters and an intricate and gripping plot, the perfect work of two fantastic authors coming together. I can’t wait to read more!!!
