#BlogTour: THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup @JennyPlatt90 @MichaelJBooks

The Chestnut Man JacketPublication: 10th January 2019 – Michael Joseph

One Tuesday in October, Rosa Hartung is returning to her job as minister for social affairs following a year’s leave of absence – granted after the dramatic disappearance of her twelve-year-old daughter. Linus Bekker, a mentally ill young man, confessed to her killing, but is unable to remember where he buried the various parts of her dismembered corpse.

On the same day Rosa returns to Parliament, a young single mother is found brutally murdered at her home in the suburbs of Copenhagen-she’s been tortured, and one hand has been cut off. Thulin and Hess, the detectives sent to investigate the crime, arrive at the address to find a figure made of chestnuts hanging from a playhouse nearby.
When yet another woman is murdered-this time with both hands missing-and another
chestnut figure is found, Thulin and Hess begin to suspect a connection with the
Hartung case. But what is it?

Thulin and Hess are racing against the clock, because its clear that the murderer is ona
mission that is far from over…

Welcome to my turn on the blog tour of THE CHESTNUT MAN. It’s my absolute pleasure to share my review of this chilling and addictive novel and I’d like to thank Jenny Platt and Michael Joseph for providing me with a copy of the book.

I loved everything about THE CHESTNUT MAN. And how can you not? With a gripping story, well-developed characters, and a noir atmosphere I found myself completely immersed in it and I devoured it in two days.

A series of horrible murders is shocking Copenaghen. Young women are brutally killed and the police arrives always too late. On the scene, they always find a doll, a man made of chestnuts. What’s its meaning? What’s the reason behind the murders? And why the murders seem to be connected to the disappearance, a year earlier, of the young daughter of the Ministry of Social Affairs?

The author created a cast of vividly drawn and multi-layered characters. The two main protagonists are the detectives working on the case, Naia Thulin and Mark Hess. Naia Thulin is a single mother, but we don’t know anything else about her personal life. She is strong-willed and determined and her life revolves around her job. She is a detective in the Homicide Squad, but she hopes to be transferred to the Cyber Crime Unit. Mark Hess is from Europal, but following a disciplinary case, he’s been temporarily relegated back to the Homicide Squad and he’s been partnered with Thulin, but none of them are happy about it. I loved those two characters and I really hope to read more about them.

Søren Sveistrup knows how to keep the suspense always high by constantly changing the points of views (from the detectives investigating the murders to the victims) and with short chapters that usually end with some sort of cliff-hanger or shocking revelations that made it almost impossible to put the book down. The murders are gruesome and some of the details may be a bit too graphic, but they fit perfectly with the bleak atmosphere of the novel.

Disturbing, fast-paced, and unpredictable, I was completely gripped by THE CHESTNUT MAN. It is an absolute must-read, a surprising debut novel, an unpredictable page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first to the last page.

#BlogTour: A YEAR AT CASTLE COURT by Holly Hepburn @HollyH_Author @simonschusterUK @harriett_col @TeamBATC #AYearAtCastleCourt

A Year at Castle CourtPublication: 27th December 2018 – Simon and Schuster UK

Sadie is a single mum, nursing a broken heart. Her best friend from childhood, Cat, is burned out from working long hours as a chef in Paris. In need of a change, they decide to invest in their dream – running their own handmade biscuit shop in gorgeous Castle Court, a three-storey food court tucked away behind Chester’s bustling streets.

They soon discover that Castle Court has its own community – a little haven of delight against the stresses of the outside world. But not everyone welcomes the new business; the patisserie owner is less than pleased by what she sees as direct competition and Greg, who runs the fancy bistro that dominates one end of the courtyard, doesn’t think Sadie and Cat have the talent or business acumen to succeed. Luckily, there’s support in the form of the delectable Jaren, who owns the Dutch waffle house opposite Smart Cookies, and Swiss chocolate-shop owner, Elin. And if all else fails, the friends can drown their sorrows in Seb’s cocktail bar on the third floor!

Welcome to Castle Court, a place where you can find international food, friends, and love. That’s where the two protagonists of the latest novel by Holly Hepburn, Cat and Sadie, are opening their own biscuit shop, Smart Cookies. Cat and Sadie have been best friends since they were children. Now, Sadie is facing motherhood alone after separating from her cheating husband while Cat is back in town after leaving her high-flying job as a chef in a renowned restaurant in Paris. They find new friends and a few enemies amongst the owners of the other businesses in the court and there is never a dull moment as they try to survive their first year at Castle Court.

I really liked the two protagonists of A YEAR AT CASTLE COURT and I enjoyed reading about their close friendship. Cat and Sadie have been best friends since childhood, they are different, but they support each other, surviving even the distance created by Sadie’s marriage and Cat’s job in France. They are realizing their dream of opening their own biscuit shop together but they have to face the hostility of some of the owners of the other businesses in the court while also dealing with problems in their personal and professional life. Luckily they are surrounded by a group of new friends that help them through their complicated love lives, scandals, jealousies, exes, and natural disasters.

A YEAR AT CASTLE COURT has an atmospheric setting, a close-knit community feeling, entertaining drama, and an immersive and romantic plot. If this is not enough to make you pick up this novel, then you should know that it’s full of descriptions of delicious food that will make your mouth water and it will make you dream of pancakes, decorated biscuits, and fabulous cocktails. If you are looking for a heart-warming and entertaining read to enjoy while curled up under a warm duvet, then the latest novel by Holly Hepburn is the right book for you and I’d like to thank Harriet and Simon and Schuster UK for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.

Publication: 15th November 2018 – Simon and Schuster UK

THE ISLAND OF TRESCO HOLDS A DARK SECRET SOMEONE WILL KILL TO PROTECT.

Ben Kitto has become the Scilly Isles’ Deputy Chief of Police. As the island’s lazy summer takes hold, he finds himself missing the excitement of the murder squad in London. But when the body of professional diver Jude Trellon is discovered, anchored to the rocks of a nearby cave, his investigative skills are once again needed.

At first it appears that the young woman’s death was a tragic accident, but when evidence is found that suggests otherwise, the islanders close ranks. With even those closest to the victim refusing to talk, it seems that plenty of people might have had reason to harm her. As the islanders remain guarded, Ben Kitto suspects a killer is on the loose in Tresco.

Everyone is a suspect.
Nobody is safe.

We first meet DI Ben Kitto in Hell Bay. After the death of his partner, Ben took a break from solving murders in London and he moved back to the Scilly Islands to recover. The move was supposed to be temporary, just a few months, but he found himself investigating a murder on the island and, at the end of the novel, he decided to remain in the place where he spent his childhood.

In RUIN BEACH, we find Ben settled down and Deputy Chief of Scilly Island’s Police. He has to investigate the death of Jude Trellon. She was a professional diver and her body was found tied to the rocks by a cave in Piper’s Hole. She was hiding a secret and the people who knew her are not talking. For Ben, everyone on the island is a suspect, even the people he’s known his entire life.

Even though the novel is slow-paced, the author knows how to keep the suspense always high, by adding a second point-of-view alongside the protagonist’s. The story is told mostly in first person by Ben’s point-of-view, but we also read Tom’s story, a young man who knows why Jude was killed. Like Ben, I found myself suspecting of everyone involved in the story. You never know who is telling the truth, who is keeping secrets, who you can trust.

I really like the character of Ben Kitto. I enjoyed reading his interactions with his sidekick Eddie, an enthusiastic young officer, with his dog Shadow, and with his friend Zoe, for whom he has a huge crush. He is well-developed, vividly-drawn and likable and I look forward to read more about him.

What I really love about this novel is the setting. The Isles of Scilly are the real protagonists of the novel. They are just off the coast of Cornwall and they are beautiful and atmospheric and they come to life thanks to the author’s attention to details.

RUIN BEACH is evocative, chilling, and engrossing, an excellent second book in a brilliant series and I’d like to thank Simon and Schuster for providing me with a copy of the book.

#BookReview: THE TRUTHS AND TRIUMPHS OF GRACE ATHERTON by Anstey Harris @Anstey_Harris @simonschusterUK @simonschusterPR @jessbarratt88 @BookMinxSJV @TeamBATC

The Truths and Triumphs of Grace AthertonPublication: 10th January 2019 – Simon & Schuster UK

For fans of The Keeper of Lost Things, The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton is the story of a woman who has her heart broken, but then puts it back together again in the most uplifting and exquisite way.

Between the simple melody of running her violin shop and the full-blown orchestra of her romantic interludes in Paris with David, her devoted partner of eight years, Grace Atherton has always set her life to music.

Her world revolves entirely around David, for Grace’s own secrets have kept everyone else at bay. Until, suddenly and shockingly, one act tips Grace’s life upside down, and the music seems to stop.

It takes a vivacious old man and a straight-talking teenager to kickstart a new chapter for Grace. In the process, she learns that she is not as alone in the world as she had once thought, that no mistake is insurmountable, and that the quiet moments in life can be something to shout about …

I first read THE TRUTHS AND TRIUMPHS OF GRACE ATHERTON back in November and I couldn’t have chosen a better book to start my 2019 reading list. It is such a beautiful and captivating novel. I read it in two days and I loved every single page.

Grace Atherton is such a fascinating and well-crafted character and I liked her very much, even in her lowest moments. A former music prodigy, a cellist who was thrown out of music school for reasons that are slowly revealed, Grace now owns her violin shop where she makes and repairs string instruments. She has no family left and she spends most of her time between her shop, with her music, and Paris, where she consumes her eight-year-old affair with David, a married man with children. David has promised her that he will leave his wife as soon as his children grow up so that they can start their own family and, while she waits, Grace crafts a flawless cello to enter the Cremona Triennale Competition in Italy and to prove to the world, but especially to herself, that she can still play the cello.

A shocking event brings to light the truth about her relationship with David and forces Grace to face both her past and her future, but it also makes her realize that she is not alone, as she finds comfort in her friendship with two people: Nadia, a troubled teenager who works part-time at her shop, and Mr. Williams, an older customer who helps her through a difficult time in her life. I loved these two characters. Nadia is bold, sassy, funny, she says everything that goes through her mind, and she is much wiser than she seems. Mr. Williams is kind, generous, and considered, always full of good advice. Anstey Harris created a cast of lovable, vividly-drawn, and relatable characters. Grace, Nadia, and Mr. Williams are well-developed and completely different from each other, they are all hiding something, they are all suffering, but they find solace and resolution in their unlikely and beautiful friendship.

Set between a small town in England, Paris, and Cremona in Italy, THE TRUTHS AND TRIUMPHS OF GRACE ATHERTON is a moving, heart-warming, and riveting story and I found myself completely immersed in it and I’d like to thank Sara-Jade and Simon and Schuster UK for providing me with an early copy and giving me the chance to read this remarkable and captivating novel.

#BlogTour: SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE by Michele Campbell @MCampbellBooks @HQstories @joe_thomas25

She Was The Quiet OnePublication: 10th January 2019 – HQ

Because murderers are never who you expect…

She was the quiet one… but is she guilty?

For twin sisters Rose and Bel, enrolling at the prestigious new boarding school should have been a fresh start. But with its sinister rituals and traditions, Odell soon brings out a deadly rivalry between the sisters.

For Sarah and husband Heath, the chance to teach at Odell seems like the best thing that ever happened to their small family – a chance to rise through the ranks and put the past behind them.

Until one dark night ends in murder.

But who’s guilty and who’s telling the truth? And who’s been in on it all along..?

Happy New Year everyone!

I am delighted to start the new year by taking part in the blog tour for the new novel by an author that knows how to captivate my attention from the first page.

SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE starts with a murder. Someone has been killed and the presumed killer has already been arrested, but we don’t know their identities. Then we are taken back in time to discover the events that led to the tragedy.

The protagonists of the novel are two young girls, Rose and Bel. They are sisters and twins but they couldn’t be more different. Rose is the good girl, she studies, she is quiet and she behaves well. On the other hand, Bel is outgoing, she is not interested in her classes and she hangs out with the cool and “mean” girls of the school. After their mother’s death, their grandmother sends them to an exclusive boarding school, Odell, but circumstances and new friends make them drift away. In the meantime, Sarah Donovan and her husband Heath are still adapting to their new roles as supervisors of one of the dorms of the school, but as things at the school spiral out of control, Sarah needs to figure out who she can trust.

Through flashbacks and police’s interviews to witnesses, the author takes us through a thrilling novel of jealousies, betrayal, ambition, and bullying. The author created well-crafted characters with two completely different sisters in competition and a young married couple trying to prove themselves. A boarding school full of teenagers coming from rich and powerful families is the perfect atmospheric setting for this novel full of suspense and twists.

SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE is very well-written and cleverly plotted and until the end I couldn’t figure out who is the victim. Once again Michele Campbell created a dark and intense novel that kept me completely engrossed and I’d like to thank Joe and HQ for inviting me to take part in the blog tour and for providing me with a copy of this immersive novel.

#BookReview: THE FIFTH TO DIE by J. D. Barker @jdbarker @HQstories

9780008250386Publication: 10th July 2018 (eBook); 27th December 2018 (paperback) – HQ

Murder. It’s a family affair.

In the midst of one of the worst winters Chicago has seen in years, the body of missing teenager Ella Reynolds is discovered under the surface of a frozen lake.

She’s been missing for three weeks… the lake froze over three months ago.

Detective Sam Porter and his team are brought in to investigate but it’s not long before another girl goes missing. The press believes the serial killer, Anson Bishop, has struck again but Porter knows differently. The deaths are too different, there’s a new killer on the loose.

Porter however is distracted. He’s still haunted by Bishop and his victims, even after the FBI have removed him from the case. His only leads: a picture of a female prisoner and a note from Bishop: ‘Help me find my mother. I think it’s time she and I talked.’

As more girls go missing and Porter’s team race to stop the body count rising, Porter disappears to track down Bishop’s mother and discover that the only place scarier than the mind of a serial killer is the mind of the mother from which he came.

Perfect for fans of Helen Fields, Val McDermid and Jo Nesbo this gripping and twisted thriller will have you wondering, how do you stop a killer when he’s been trained from birth?

Since The Fourth Monkey, the first book of this gripping series, kept me completely glued to the pages, I have been really looking forward to reading the sequel, THE FIFTH TO DIE, and once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down.

The book starts four months after the events of The Fourth Monkey and Chicago detective Sam Porter is still looking for Anson Bishop, aka 4MK (the Fourth Monkey Killer), even though the FBI has removed him from the case. In the meantime, there is another killer on the loose who is kidnapping and killing young girls while Anson Bishop wants his help in finding his mother.

Even though the novel is told from different points of views, from the detectives to the FBI, from the killer to the victims, and the reader seems to get a full view of the story, there are so many twists and surprises to keep you always on the edge of your seat. The chapters are short and almost each one of them ends with a shocking revelation or a twist that made me say “I’ll read just another chapter” and then I found myself reading another 100 pages.

The author created a cast of well-developed and multi-layered characters. Anson Bishop is very complex and we find out more about his troubled past. Sam Porter has also some secrets from the past and he is still helped by his team. I love the characters of Nash, Clair, and Kloz who have Sam’s back, even when he is forced to take a leave, and there were moments when they made me laugh with their quips and their irony. I also liked the character of FBI agent Poole and I am already looking forward to read more about this character.

THE FIFTH TO DIE is fast-paced, dark, intense, and chilling. The ending left me in complete shock and breathless and I can’t wait to read the third book of this brilliant and captivating series.

#BookReview: DEEP DIRTY TRUTH by Steph Broadribb @crimethrillgirl @OrendaBooks #TeamLori #IAmLori

Deep Dirty Truth 2Publication: 5th November 2018 (eBook); 24th January 2019 (paperback) – Orenda Books

A price on her head. A secret worth dying for. Just 48 hours to expose the truth…

Single-mother bounty hunter Lori Anderson has finally got her family back together, but her new-found happiness is shattered when she’s snatched by the Miami Mob – and they want her dead. Rather than a bullet, they offer her a job: find the Mob’s ‘numbers man’ – Carlton North – who’s in protective custody after being forced to turn federal witness against them. If Lori succeeds, they’ll wipe the slate clean and the price on her head – and those of her family – will be removed. If she fails, they die.
With North due in court in forty-eight hours, Lori sets off across Florida, racing against the clock to find him and save her family. Only in this race the prize is more deadly – and the secret she shares with JT more dangerous – than she ever could have imagined. In this race only the winner gets out alive…
Brimming with tension, high-stakes jeopardy and high-voltage action, and a deep, emotional core, Deep Dirty Truth is an unmissable thriller by one of the freshest and most exciting voices in crime fiction.

I am so so happy Lori Anderson is back!!! I am addicted to this series and I am really thankful to Orenda Books and to the author Steph Broadribb for letting me be part of #TeamLori and for providing me with an advanced copy of the book which I read as soon as I got my hands on it.

The protagonist of DEEP DIRTY TRUTH is Lori Anderson. I liked this character right from the start, right from the first novel in the series Deep Down Dead. She is determined, fearless, smart, and loyal. A mother with a young daughter, Lori is a bounty hunter, travelling around the United States looking for fugitives to bring back to prison. However, in this third novel, she is the one with a bounty on her head. Lori’s happiness at playing happy family with JT and their nine-year-old Dakota is cut short by the Mafia mob who wants her to find someone for them in exchange for the lives and freedom of her and her family. But the job is not as straightforward as it seems and, in a race against time, Lori has to face not only mobsters, but also the FBI, and the alligators that live in the Florida Everglades.

The novel is fast-paced, thrilling and completely immersive. Lori is a very likable and well-crafted character, she is strong-willed, resourceful, and courageous and she is ready to do absolutely everything to protect her family. I like that, in this novel, the story is told also from JT’s point of view and we get to see more of this character. He is Lori’s mentor, the man she loves, the father of her child and, in the previous two books, he remained always a bit on the background, but now he has a more central role in the story and we get a better understanding of this character that I like more and more.

The author’s wonderful writing style and her great attention to details bring the reader right into the Florida setting with its heat, the dangerous alligators, and the sharks in the ocean. Gripping and full of tension, DEEP DIRTY TRUTH will keep you on the edge of your seat and, even though I think this is the best one so far, I am already looking forward to book number 4!

#BookReview: THE HUNTING PARTY by Lucy Foley @lucyfoleytweets @fictionpubteam @HarperFiction

The Hunting PartyPublication: 3rd December 2018 (eBook); 24th January 2019 (hardcover) – HarperCollins UK

EVERYONE’S INVITED.
EVERYONE’S A SUSPECT.

Bristling with tension, bitter rivalries, and toxic friendships, get ready for the most hotly-anticipated thriller of 2019.

In a remote hunting lodge, deep in the Scottish wilderness, old friends gather for New Year.

The beautiful one
The golden couple
The volatile one
The new parents
The quiet one
The city boy
The outsider

The victim.

Not an accident – a murder among friends.

I heard so many good things about Lucy Foley’s new novel that I was really looking forward to reading it. My expectations were pretty high, as I read many positive reviews,  and I am happy to say that they were fully met. I was so immersed in the novel that I had trouble putting it down and I read it in two days.

A group of friends, a remote location, a snowstorm that stops everyone from getting in and out, a murderer among them, a suspenseful atmosphere worth of an Agatha Christie’s novel, these are all elements that make this novel twisty, compelling, and unputdownable.

The protagonists met at Oxford University ten years earlier and they have been friends since then. There is the golden couple, Julien and Miranda,  who has been together since college; there are the new parents, Giles and Sanita; there is Mark with his girlfriend of three years, Emma, the outsider of the group who would do anything to fit in with Mark’s friends; there is Katie, the single quiet workaholic friend; and there are Nick and Bo who are there just because they are friends with Katie. These nine people spend every New Year’s Eve together and this year, they have rented The Lodge, an exclusive house in the Scottish Highlands. Everyone is hiding something and when a body turns up, past jealousies, secrets and lies risk to come to light.

Told from different points of views and on two timelines (before and after the murder), THE HUNTING PARTY is a twisty and gripping novel. The characters are flawed and often not very likable. They are very well-drawn and jealousies, secrets, and tension between the group of friends is palpable through the pages. One of them is killed and one of them is probably the murderer and Lucy Foley does an amazing job keeping the reader in the dark about their identity and, despite the hints she gives here and there, I didn’t figure it out until at the end when it was all revealed.

I loved the setting the author chose for this gripping novel. A remote house, a beautiful winter landscape, snow everywhere, they all fit perfectly with the twisty and chilling plot of the novel and, thanks to the author’s attention to details, I could almost picture it in my head.

THE HUNTING PARTY is a riveting, captivating, and atmospheric read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, a well-written and gripping story that you won’t be able to put down and I’d like to thank HarperCollins for providing me with a copy of the book.

#BlogTour: HALFWAY by B.E. Jones #Halfway @bevjoneswriting @TheCrimeVault @damppebbles #damppeblesblogtours

halfway coverPublication: 1st November 2018 – Constable

If everyone is lying, who can you trust?

The Halfway Inn is closed to customers, side-lined by a bypass and hidden deep in inhospitable countryside. One winter’s night, two women end up knocking on the door, seeking refuge as a blizzard takes hold.

But why is the landlord less than pleased to see them? And what is his elderly father trying so hard to tell them?

At the local police station PC Lissa Lloyd is holding the fort while the rest of her team share in the rare excitement of a brutal murder at an isolated farmhouse. A dangerous fugitive is on the run – but how can Lissa make a name for herself if she’s stuck at her desk? When a call comes in saying the local district nurse is missing, she jumps at the chance to investigate her disappearance.

The strangers at Halfway wait out the storm, but soon realise they might have been safer on the road. It seems not all the travellers will make it home for Christmas . . .

“Halfway… a timely reminder for travellers that they are exactly at the midpoint between where they are going  and where they are coming from – wherever that is!”

This novel has the perfect setting for a gripping and suspenseful murder story. A small town in the middle of a snowstorm with blocked roads and no phone signal. Add a killer on the loose, people looking for a shelter from the snow, a remote farmhouse, and the landlord of a closed inn who seems to be hiding something, and I found myself spending a Sunday afternoon completely immersed in this novel.

The story is told from three different points of views. One is a young woman with a complicated past and secrets to hide. She is hitch-hiking through the country when she is caught in the snowstorm. A nurse gives her a lift in her car, but from here things get more difficult and darker. Then, there is an old man bedridden by old age and disease. He thinks about his past, his estranged son, and his current obscure situation. And lastly, there is a young and ambitious officer who wants to prove herself and dreams of the bright light of the big city, but she is stuck at her desk. What do these three characters have in common?

The novel is slow-paced but full of tension. Page after page, there is a weird feeling of something bad about to happen that kept me glued to the pages. A series of gruesome murders and the dark atmosphere that frames the story make for a chilling and haunting read.

The characters have a past full of secrets, often disturbing, that are slowly revealed. Although I didn’t find them very likable, the protagonists of the novel are multi-layered, complex, and very well-drawn.

HALFWAY is a dark, claustrophobic, and gripping novel and I’d like to thank Emma Welton for inviting me to take part in the blog tour.
